Bus stakeholders from Glasgow and across Scotland virtually gathered last week for an engaging discussion on the future of bus and to contribute ideas and possible solutions to support, promote and deliver the wide-ranging benefits of bus and coach travel, whilst aiming to tackle the challenges facing the industry right now.
Taking place during Scottish Bus Week, Scotland’s first week long celebration of bus, the Summit offered stakeholders from across the sector the chance to collaborate on topics that will help shape the future of bus including the drive towards net zero, integrated ticketing, adapting to new technologies and integrated modals.
Alongside this, prioritising tackling the challenges that bus is facing right now was top of the agenda, with issues such as driver recruitment, ticket pricing and industry and local authority collaboration discussed throughout.
Speakers included Stagecoach West Scotland Managing Director and Chair of the GlasGo Bus Alliance, Fiona Doherty, UK bus expert, Chris Cheek, and Joan Aitken, Chair of the Glasgow Bus Partnership Steering Group.
GlasGo Bus Chair, Fiona Doherty, raised the main issues she believes need addressed to achieve a seamless, efficient and integrated bus service that not only aids the post-pandemic economic recovery but helps deliver Scotland’s net zero ambitions, are road congestion, roadside infrastructure and industry collaboration.
Contributions from the Summit will inform a route map to be shared with government, the bus community and wider stakeholders to help realise the potential of bus in this crucial decade for action and change.
